Dear reader,

We are delighted to publish the third INFRAMIX newsletter. INFRAMIX is a three-year project, funded by the European Commission, under the Horizon 2020 programme. The main objective of INFRAMIX is to prepare the road infrastructure with specific affordable adaptations and to support it with new models and tools, to accommodate for the step-wise introduction of automated vehicles.

The scope of the newsletter is to provide regular updates on project progress and inform you about highlights as well as INFRAMIX and other relevant events. It is envisioned to have four e-newsletters per year following the seasonal model.

In this third issue you will be able to find out more about:
  • The outputs of the first stakeholder Workshop;
  • Save the Date for the second Stakeholder Workshop;
  • the INFRAMIX tests;
  • INFRAMIX new equipment installation for connected highways;
  • INFRAMIX representation within EUCAD 2019;
  • INFRAMIX participation in 13th ITS European Congress;
  • INFRAMIX at ASECAP Days 2019;
  • the new INFRAMIX LinkedIn page;
  • upcoming events.
If you wish to find out more INFRAMIX news and cannot wait for the next newsletter, visit our INFRAMIX website.

Enjoy your summer holidays!

The INFRAMIX consortium

The first INFRAMIX Workshop took place in Barcelona on May, 14th.

The INFRAMIX project organised its first interactive workshop “Preparing road infrastructure for the introduction of Automated Driving” on 14th May at Fira Barcelona. The event was part of Automobile Barcelona Fair, one of the most renowned trade fairs in the world.

Inframix is a project funded by the European Union within the Horizon2020 programme. Its aim is to prepare road infrastructure to mixed traffic flows of traditional, connected and automated vehicles. As such, the workshop was meant to increase the visibility of the project among targeted stakeholders, such as road operators, car manufacturers, but also institutions and end users. Furthermore, it represented a valuable occasion to foster mutual knowledge and best practice exchange among different European projects and working groups focusing on automated mobility. Finally, the workshop was aimed at collecting constructive feedback from drivers regarding their user perception and experience.

INFRAMIX tests

ASFINAG, along with AustriaTech, Siemens Mobility and Virtual Vehicle, conducted very successful testing days on the Austrian test site on 9th and 10th May 2019. The goal was to test already further future generations of these Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) messages and to ensure that these can be received and understood by vehicles on the road that are equipped with the right receiver.

INFRAMIX installed new equipment for connected highways

Autopistas installed new technological equipment on the Spanish Inframix test site in Girona on 12th June 2019.

What is INFRAMIX new road equipment?

Autopistas installed several new technological innovations on the Spanish test site of the project in Aiguaviva, near Girona. The highway AP-7 test site is part of the TEN-TMediterranean corridor connecting France and Spain. Among other things, the new road equipment includes several sensors to monitor the vehicles passing through this specific piece of highway and tools to enable the communication between the road infrastructure and the automated vehicles (AVs), in other words, I2V and V2I.

Furthermore, Autopistas elaborated new Variable Message Signs (VMSs), showing a light blue car connecting to the outer environment. Consequently, the Inframix VMSs have been installed in the Spanish highway in order to allow the demonstrations of the Inframix scenarios.

ICCS presented the INFRAMIX project at EUCAD 2019 conference

INFRAMIX participated in EUCAD 2019 Conference, the second European Conference on connected and automated driving "Connected Automated Driving: Europe takes the lead" on 2 & 3 of April 2019.

The INFRAMIX project in collaboration with SAFERtec project, among other European funded research and innovation projects on cooperative, connected and automated mobility, participated in EUCAD exhibition with the number 8 joint information stand at the Conference at the Charlemagne Building. The booth was supported by AustriaTECH, ICCS and IDIADA partners.

INFRAMIX participation during the 13th ITS European Congress in Brainport

The INFRAMIX project was part of the 13th ITS European Congress, the most important congress on Europe, regarding smart mobility and digitalisation of transport. The event, organised by ERTICO,  took place from 3 to 6 of June at the Evoluon Congress Centre, in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

About ITS European Congress 2019

The ITS European Congress is part of a bigger cluster of ITS Congresses. It is organised in a European city in the years where there is no ITS World Congress in Europe. The ITS World Congress rotates between Europe, the Asia Pacific region and the Americas. For all European Congresses, ERTICO and its Partners work closely with the European Commission and the host city to deliver an outstanding event built around three pillars:

  • International Programme sessions and presentations with top speakers from the industry
  • Demonstrations of the current transport technologies developed and deployed throughout the world
  • Exhibition of cutting-edge companies

These events are a strategic opportunity for the transport industry to come together and show the latest innovations, with a slightly different focus for each year. The Congresses display the host city’s latest achievements in the field of intelligent mobility services, supporting the hosts in increasing the awareness of the importance of new solutions and investments in the host region and country.

During the Congress, ERTICO Partners, sponsors and exhibitors have the opportunity to arrange more focused events before, during and after the Congress, as well as having access to meeting rooms, lounge areas and hospitality rooms.

INFRAMIX participation

INFRAMIX was represented from ICCS,etc, etc. In particular, INFRAMIX participate in SIS 38, Infrastructure-assited vehicles from security requirements and software architectures to implementation solutions, in collaboration with SAFERTEC as well as on SIS 14 Track automation and platooning, in collaboration with ICT4CART and interACT.

INFRAMIX at ASECAP Days 2019

The Inframix team took part in several sessions at ASECAP Days 2019. Stamatis Manganiaris from ICCS presented Inframix infrastructure categorisation (ISAD) in a session on asset preservation for enhanced road safety. In particular, he focused on the contribution ISAD is giving to the circulation of autonomous vehicles though C-ITS (Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems). You can find his presentation here.

Furthermore, Jacqueline Erhart from ASFINAG moderated a session on 30th May on Common Interests in C-ITS Policies and Strategies (CAV). Among others, Alexander Skabardonis from the University of California Berkley (USA) presented the US tests and simulation results for managed lanes. The challenges and opportunities for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) are very similar to the ones addressed by Inframix.
